Tamil Nadu is where Gujarati families go for temples that are still in daily worship on a scale nothing back home matches — Meenakshi at Madurai, Ramanathaswamy at Rameswaram, Brihadeeswarar at Thanjavur, Ranganatha at Srirangam. The state rewards a slower pace than Kerala: distances between towns are longer, the heat on the plains is real for most of the year, and the temples themselves demand time — long corridors, big crowds, and rituals that are worth understanding before you go rather than rushing through.
For Ahmedabad families the appeal is specific: this is a pilgrimage trip and a heritage trip at once, it suits three generations because most of it is done by car and on foot at temple pace, and Madurai and Chennai both have Gujarati and Jain vegetarian food if you know where to look. Add Ooty or Kodaikanal at the end and you get genuine hill relief after days on the hot plains. We run this as a standalone Tamil Nadu trip or combined with Kerala for groups with 10+ days.
What to see in Tamil Nadu
Meenakshi Amman Temple, Madurai
A living temple city within a temple: 14 gopurams, the thousand-pillar hall, and the evening palanquin ritual at 9:30 pm when the goddess is carried to Lord Sundareswarar's shrine.
Ramanathaswamy Temple, Rameswaram
One of the twelve Jyotirlingas, famous for its 1,200-metre pillared corridor — the longest in India — and the ritual bath at 22 theerthams (wells) inside the temple complex.
Brihadeeswarar Temple, Thanjavur
A 1,000-year-old UNESCO World Heritage Chola temple; the 66-metre vimana is capped by a single 80-tonne granite block, still not fully explained by engineers.
Srirangam, Trichy
The largest functioning Hindu temple complex in the world by area, with seven concentric walled enclosures (prakarams) dedicated to Ranganatha.
Kanyakumari
India's southernmost tip, where the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean meet; sunrise and sunset over water from the same beach, and the Vivekananda Rock Memorial by ferry.
Mahabalipuram shore temples
7th–8th century Pallava rock-cut temples and the Shore Temple, a UNESCO site 55 km south of Chennai; also home to Arjuna's Penance, the largest bas-relief in the world.
Pondicherry
The French Quarter's tree-lined streets, Auroville, and a genuinely different pace from the rest of Tamil Nadu — a good soft landing or soft ending to a temple-heavy trip.

Getting there from Ahmedabad
Fly: IndiGo and Air India fly Ahmedabad–Chennai non-stop daily, about 2 h 15 m. Chennai (MAA) is right for Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry. Ahmedabad–Madurai, Ahmedabad–Coimbatore and Ahmedabad–Trichy are usually one-stop (via Chennai, Bengaluru or Mumbai), typically 4–6 hours door to door.
Train: The Ahmedabad–Chennai route takes about 32–36 hours depending on the train (e.g. Navjeevan Express); Ahmedabad to Madurai or Kanyakumari runs closer to 35–40 hours. Sensible only for travellers who want the journey itself, not as the main way to get south.
Within Tamil Nadu: a private car with driver is the norm and the only practical option with elders, luggage and temple-hopping. Highways between major towns (Madurai–Rameswaram, Trichy–Thanjavur) are good and fast; the Kanyakumari and Ooty approach roads are slower and winding.
Getting around. Everything in this guide is done by private car with an English- and Hindi-speaking driver who travels with you for the whole trip — essential given the drive lengths between temple towns. Autos work for short hops within Madurai's old city and Pondicherry's French Quarter. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train (Ooty–Coonoor–Mettupalayam) is a scenic add-on, not day-to-day transport, and needs booking weeks in advance in season.

Permits, rules and packing
No permits needed anywhere in Tamil Nadu for Indian nationals. Dress codes are enforced at every major temple: no shorts, no sleeveless tops, and men are often asked to remove shirts or wear a dhoti at inner sanctums (available on hire at the entrance, ₹20–50). Some temples, including parts of Meenakshi and Ramanathaswamy, restrict non-Hindus from the innermost sanctum — signage marks the boundary clearly, and our guides brief mixed-faith groups in advance. Auroville's Matrimandir interior needs an advance online booking, not a permit, but slots fill up so arrange it before travel.
What to pack
- Light cotton clothing for the plains — it stays warm November to February too
- A light jacket or shawl for Ooty/Kodaikanal evenings (12–15°C) if the hills are on the itinerary
- Comfortable slip-on footwear — temples require bare feet and you will remove shoes often, sometimes at the outer gate
- A shawl or stole for women, and a spare dhoti-ready outfit for men, for stricter temple sections
- Umbrella or light raincoat if travelling October–December, especially on the coast
- Sunscreen and a hat — temple courtyards are open stone and can be scorching by mid-morning
- Motion-sickness tablets for the Ooty ghat road and the Kanyakumari–Trichy long drive
Veg and Jain food in Tamil Nadu
- South Indian vegetarian food is naturally vegetarian by default — idli, dosa, pongal, sambar and rice-based meals need no special request, which makes Tamil Nadu one of the easiest states for a strict-veg Gujarati group.
- Madurai and Chennai both have Gujarati thali restaurants and North Indian options; smaller towns like Rameswaram, Thanjavur and Kanyakumari rely on good South Indian vegetarian hotels, which we pre-select for cleanliness and consistency.
- Jain travellers should ask specifically for no onion, garlic or root vegetables — most temple-town restaurants can do this on request, and we confirm it with the hotel in writing for every booking.
- Try the temple prasadam where offered (Rameswaram and Palani are known for it), filter coffee everywhere, and Tirunelveli halwa as a specific regional sweet worth the stop.

Where the money goes
- Flights are 35–45% of the trip: Ahmedabad–Chennai return runs ₹9,000–15,000 booked early; Ahmedabad–Madurai or Trichy (one-stop) runs ₹12,000–20,000 and rises sharply in December.
- Kanyakumari ferry to Vivekananda Rock Memorial: ₹100–150 return per person, weather-dependent and can be suspended in rough seas — always keep a buffer hour.
- Nilgiri Mountain Railway (Ooty–Coonoor): ₹250–500 per person depending on class; book online weeks ahead in April–June and October, as seats sell out.
- Temple special/express darshan tickets (Meenakshi, Ramanathaswamy, Brihadeeswarar): ₹100–500 per person and worth it for seniors to skip the general queue on a festival day.

Travelling with parents and children
- Temple floors are stone and often sun-heated by mid-morning — plan darshans for early morning or after 4 pm, and carry socks for seniors who find bare stone uncomfortable.
- Meenakshi Temple's daily crowds are heaviest 10 am–1 pm and on Fridays (the goddess's special day); go at opening (5 am) or evening for a calmer visit with elders.
- The Kanyakumari–Trichy and Pondicherry–Coimbatore legs are 5–7 hour drives — break them with a planned lunch stop and keep expectations realistic for young children and seniors.
- Rameswaram's 22-theertham ritual bath involves standing under successive buckets of well water poured over you — optional, but popular with groups; carry a change of clothes and a plastic bag for wet ones.
- Ooty's ghat road has continuous hairpin bends for the last hour; seat anyone prone to car sickness in front and time the drive to avoid arriving after dark.
- Book Nilgiri Mountain Railway tickets and Auroville's Matrimandir slot well before travel — both sell out in season and cannot be arranged on arrival.
Questions families ask us about Tamil Nadu
What is the 22 theerthams ritual at Rameswaram?
Inside the Ramanathaswamy Temple complex are 22 wells, each believed to have a different taste and healing property. Pilgrims are led from well to well by temple staff, who draw water and pour it over you in succession — the full ritual takes about 45 minutes and there's a small fee (₹200–300, arranged at the temple). It's optional but done by most visiting families; carry a change of clothes.
Can we really see both sunrise and sunset over water at Kanyakumari?
Yes, most days, since the beach faces both directions. On Chitra Pournami — the full moon of the Tamil month Chithirai, usually in April — the sun sets and the full moon rises almost simultaneously on the same horizon, a special local event that draws large crowds; ask us for the exact date if you want to time a visit around it.
Ooty or Kodaikanal — which should we pick?
Ooty is larger, better connected (via Coimbatore, 85 km) and has the Nilgiri Mountain Railway and more sightseeing variety. Kodaikanal is smaller, quieter, reached via Madurai (120 km, 3–3½ hours) and suits families who want fewer crowds and a simple lake-and-viewpoint stay. If you're already doing the Madurai temple circuit, Kodaikanal fits the route better; if you're routing via Coimbatore/Chennai, Ooty is the natural add-on.
Can we combine Tamil Nadu with Kerala in one trip?
Yes, this is a popular combination for groups with 10+ days. The natural join is Kanyakumari to Kovalam/Thiruvananthapuram (90 km, 2½ hours), so a Tamil Nadu temple trail followed by a short Kerala coastal or hill extension works well. Ask for our combined itinerary rather than booking the two separately, since routing and flights change.
Is the temple dress code strictly enforced?
Yes, more strictly than in most of North India. Shorts, sleeveless tops and short skirts are turned away at the gate at Meenakshi, Ramanathaswamy and Brihadeeswarar. Men in trousers are usually fine, but some inner sanctums ask for a dhoti (available on hire at the entrance). We brief every group on what to wear before the trip and again each morning.
How far in advance should we book?
For December, Margazhi month (mid-December to mid-January) or a group of 8+, book 6–8 weeks ahead — flights and heritage hotels in Thanjavur and Madurai fill early. For other months, 3–4 weeks is usually enough. Ooty and Kodaikanal hotels need extra lead time in the April–June hot-season rush.
