Classic Temple Trail
The route most families take: fly into Madurai, do Meenakshi darshan, cross to Rameshwaram for the Jyotirlinga and theertham snan, then finish at Srirangam and Rockfort before flying out of Trichy.
Day by day
Arrive and settle in
One-stop flight from Ahmedabad lands in Madurai by afternoon. Check into the hotel and rest after travel. In the evening, walk around the Meenakshi Temple's outer streets and have your first Tamil thali dinner.
Meenakshi Amman darshan
Morning darshan at Meenakshi Amman Temple (opens 5 am; the crowd builds after 8 am, so an early start helps). Afternoon visit to Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace, a 17th-century Indo-Saracenic hall with a sound-and-light show in the evening. Return to the temple by 9 pm for the night ceremony, when the deity is carried in procession to Lord Sundareswarar's shrine.
To the Jyotirlinga
Drive to Rameshwaram (170 km, about 4 hours) via Ramanathapuram. Afternoon Agni Theertham sea bath followed by darshan at Ramanathaswamy Temple; the main sanctum closes 1 pm–3 pm, so plan the visit around that. Evening free to walk the temple corridors, among the longest in India.
22 theertham snan and Dhanushkodi
Early morning 22 theertham snan inside the temple (buy the ticket at the counter; wet clothes only, no separate changing room at each well, so wear something you can bathe in repeatedly). After a change and breakfast, drive to Dhanushkodi and the Pamban Bridge viewpoint, with a jeep transfer for the last 5 km of beach track. Visit Kothandaramaswamy Temple on the way back, associated with Vibhishana's surrender to Lord Rama.
Srirangam and Rockfort
Drive to Trichy (170 km, about 4 hours). Afternoon darshan at Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangam — allow at least 2 hours to walk through the outer prakaras, shops and the thousand-pillar hall before reaching the sanctum. Evening climb (or a slower walk with breaks) up the 400-plus steps of Rockfort to the Uchi Pillayar shrine for sunset views.
Jambukeswarar and fly home
Morning visit to Jambukeswarar Temple at Thiruvanaikaval, a short drive from Srirangam. Head to Trichy airport for the flight home; leave at least 3 hours before departure.
