Day by day
Into Arunachal
Fly Ahmedabad–Guwahati. Our driver meets you and drives about 375 km (around 9 hours) into Arunachal Pradesh to Dirang. A long first day — we suggest the earliest flight, or arriving the evening before.
Over Sela Pass
Climb to Sela Pass at 13,700 ft and its lake, then the Jaswantgarh war memorial, and on to Tawang (about 10,000 ft). Rest and acclimatise in the evening.
Madhuri lake and Bum La
Madhuri (Sangetsar) lake, PT Tso lake and the Bum La India–China border, subject to the special permit and weather on the day. The vehicle for this excursion is paid locally.
Tawang monastery
Tawang Monastery, the largest in India; Urgelling Gompa, birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama; and the Tawang War Memorial. Evening at the local market.
Nuranang falls, down to Bomdila
Drive back over Sela Pass, stopping at Nuranang (Jang) waterfall, to Bomdila and its monastery.
Down to the Brahmaputra plains
About 225 km (6 hours) down to Kaziranga. Evening at leisure in the resort.
Rhino safari, up to Shillong
Early-morning elephant or jeep safari in one zone of the park (paid on the spot; the park is open roughly November–April). After breakfast, drive about 295 km (8 hours) to Shillong via Umiam Lake.
Canyons and waterfalls
Laitlum canyons, Krang Suri and Phe Phe falls near Jowai, then on to Dawki for the night.
Clear river and Asia's cleanest village
Boating on the Umngot river (paid on the spot), Mawlynnong village, the bamboo sky walk and the single-decker living root bridge, then the India–Bangladesh border and on to Cherrapunji.
Caves and waterfalls of Sohra
Mawsmai cave, Mawdok valley, Arwah cave, Nohkalikai falls, Seven Sisters falls and Eco Park. Back to Shillong (about 65 km, 2 hours).
Shillong town
Ward's Lake, the Don Bosco museum, Lady Hydari Park and the cathedral, then about 110 km (4 hours) down to Guwahati.
Kamakhya darshan, fly home
6 am darshan at Maa Kamakhya, breakfast, then Umananda, Basistha and Balaji temples as time allows before the airport drop.
